I am a new member here and glad I found this site. I am reviving a 35 gallon tall hex tank that I haven't used in 10 years and am planning a community tank. I cleaned up the tank and put in new blue gravel. I am using an old Dynaflo 2 hang on filter that worked well in the past and is easy to maintain. I have a Penn-plax silencer air pump that runs nice and quiet--the way I like it.
I am cycling this tank using the method recommended on this site. I am at day 19 in the cycling process and just added the 2nd full dose of ammonia yesterday. The ammonia dropped overnight from about 3 ppm to 1ppm. Nitrites are over 5 ppm (highest reading on API test kit) and nitrates are at about 80ppm. I'm waiting for the ammonia to drop a little more to .25ppm and then will add the maintenance dose. I assume I am just to add the one maintenance dose and then wait for both ammonia and nitrites to drop to 0 and then add another full dose and then hope both reading drop to 0 in 24 hours to complete the cycle.
I look forward to participating in this message board and to gain lots of knowledge from past and future postings on this board.
Tank you
