Fishless Cycle

You do not need aeration during a cycle or any other time really. If you like bubbles in the water, the venturi will certainly serve that purpose. I have a 4+ that I run with the venturi tube removed because I don't care for the noise it makes. My fish and plants in that tank are doing just fine with no intentional air bubbles. I do run CO2 in the tank for my plants, it is my only high tech planted right now, and even with the excess CO2, the fish have no problems with no added air bubbles.

hi oldman thanks for answering

I thought you did need aeration during cycling if you have your temp up higher to help promote bacteria growth??? because the higher heat pushes out the oxygen or something like that. Just getting this off the pinned cycling topic on the resource center.

You do need good oxygen content in the water but as long as you have enough water flow to prevent any stratification in the tank's water, the oxygen will be close to saturation at all times. More bubbles don't do anything but sell air pumps.

woop sounds to me that i dont need to buy another air pump :hyper: i'll use the venturi to kepp the surface moving instead...this can mean only one thing....let the fishless cycle....BEGIN!!!

Thanks alot :*

PS/ whats stratification mean???

Stratification is where the water ends up sort of in layers, strata, and they don't mix well. By pointing the outlet from your filter along the length of the tank, you can pretty much ensure good mixing that will prevent any local stagnant areas. Stratification is the real issue because if a thin layer of water near the surface is just allowed to sit there without being mixed into the rest of the water, only that part of the water will get the proper gas exchange going on with the air above the water surface. The layers below the surface will gradually become depleted of oxygen.
