Question.1. Nitrates seem to bounce up down betwwen 5 and 10 ppm is this a good thing or just it is happening ?.. or me poorly testing
Question.2. Nitrite test... Purple not going straight to bootom and staying there starting to have purple cloud at bottom does this mean nitrites and starting
to come down ?
Question.3. when should i start testing at 12 hrs (as it now Oppm at 24hrs for last 5 tests)

Nitrites 5ppm

1st test 8/8/09
8pm
PH 7.6
Ammonia 4 ppm
Nitrates 40ppm
Nitrites 2ppm

Only add the ammonia every 24hr at the same point
IMO
I would drop down the ammonia to 2ppm now to give the nitrites a chance to come down,
When the get to 0 then go back up to 4ppm ish
:good:

As Sjolliff suggested, you should drop down to only adding enough ammonia to get to about 2 ppm while going through the nitrite spike. You may well be getting close to actually being able to read the nitrite levels right now. When that happens is soon enough to start monitoring at 12 hours for nitrites and ammonia. Unfortunately the nitrate readings are affected by nitrite concentrations so they are almost meaningless during your nitrite spike. Once nitrites are again measurable is soon enough to start testing for nitrates, unless you want to practice. Personally, I give my arm a rest during that part.

Thanks Guys,
New Plan from tommorrow
I will look at 8am in morning
from tommorrow evening i will add 2ppm
i think this should give me a 12hrs test at Oppm ammonia as at moment i get 0.25 at about 12hrs
if i understand correct the lower adding of ammonia will allow Nitrites to drop back..??
which will allow me to start testing them

is that about right???

Hope so ,
Ginga

That is the general idea but it might take a while to drop down where you can see it. Each ppm of ammonia add has been converted to about 2 1/2 ppm of nitrites so they may be quite high by now.
