Hi, Getting delivery of my Fluval edge 2moro and about to start my fishless cycle, i have got Ammonia to start the cycle, I know it is probably a frequently asked question, what does ppm mean and how much Ammonia should i put in for the 23 litre (6 US Gallons)??? Thanks

Hi,

PPM means parts per million. You can calculate the amount of ammonia you need using this calculator linked here --> Calculator

Assuming your ammonia is 9.5% which most tend to be, the amount you need to add is 1.21ml of ammonia. You are better slightly underdosing than overdosing so you'd probably be better aiming for 4ppm rather than 5ppm. To achieve 4ppm you would need to add 0.97ml so if you add 1ml you'd be somewhere in the middle :good:

Its always better to add slightly less because you can always add more. If ammonia levels reach 8ppm or above then a different form of bacteria is encouraged to grow that you dont want meaning if you overdosed you'd have to do a water change to bring the level down to an acceptable amount such as 4/5ppm

Agree, ppm is equivalent to mg/l for the things we do here in the hobby, if you happen to see that designation and wonder.

Also agree with coming in "under" so you can add more if needed. Andy put it nicely.
