i got a new tank just over a week ago and i am attempting my first ever fishless cycle(my current tank came to me with water etc from my fiances Dad so i didnt need to do anything to it) anyway, i read an article on here about needing ammonia(sp?) to cycle it but i couldnt find any in the lfs so i bought a bottle of cycling stuff even though i read it wasnt much good i figured its better then nothing.

however, im just cleaning out my other tank and decided to stick all the "old" water in the new tank-is this a good idea? i dont know anyone to ask for any used filter media so i thought this might be worth a shot. does that sound ok or am i doing this totally wrong?

never thought cycling a tank would be so tricky! any tips are definately welcome!

Are you transfering everything from the 'old' tank over or starting afresh? If you are transfering everything over you can do it as a oner and move the filter with it.

If not you can split your filter media from your old tank and I think Boots sell house hold ammonia. Remember it is the filter that is cycled not the tank.

The bacteria you need to colonise the filter don't live in the water; can you ask the LFS for a piece of mature media? Doesn't have to be huge, anything will kick start the new filter.
