I recently completed the fishless cycle on my 60 litre quarantine aquarium and I am now looking to use it to house new stock for 7-14 days before they are transferred to my main tank which holds 120 litres.

I am planning to purchase 1 small (3-4cm) female German Blue Ram and 2 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish for the 60 litre tank. The GBR will eventually be transferred to the main tank, however, the 2 DNR will remain in the 60 litre tank and I will eventually transfer 1 DNR to the 60 litre tank from the main tank.

Is the stocking level for the 60 litre aquarium ok given that I've only just completed the qualifying week of the fishless cycle?

I'd also appreciate some feedback regarding my stocking level in the 120 litre tank, which currently contains:

1 x male German Blue Ram (6-7cm)
5 x Black Neon Tetra
1 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish
2 Dwarf Suckermouth catfish

Thanks,

Mark.

Mark, the 60L sounds just fine for housing those 3 fish and going on to serve as your quarantine tank. Your new biofilter should be more than ready to handle an even bigger load than that but your plan is right since you will then move the GBR over. Good luck with your acclimations (this weekend I presume.) WD

Thanks for the clarification.

I tested my water at the end of the fishless cycle today and had readings of 0 ppm of total ammonia, 0 ppm of nitrite, 8.0 PH and 80+ ppm of nitrate. I conducted a 100% W/C and bizarely got readings of 0.25 ppm of total ammonia and about 80 ppm of nitrate. I tested for free ammonia using a specialist Seachem test kit and this indicating 0 ppm so I didn't sweat too much.

I did another 100% W/C and got readings of 0 ppm of total ammonia and 20-25 ppm of nitrate as well as a lower PH of 7.4. It will be interesting to see what happens to the PH as without c02 injection I've experienced PH rises to 8.4 both in my pond and main tank which most people on TFF find odd, including myself given that I can't find what pushes it up.

Anyway, I reserved "the largest female GBR" on Friday with Wharf Aquatics and picked it up today along with a male and female Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish. The male DNR fish was chasing the other and the female GBR was staring at the male GBR in my other larger tank lol. This behaviour is both amusing and clarification that the water quality is good.

I'll be soon moving the larger female DNR from my main planted tank as it's my understanding that they need oxygen rich water which I think isn't so much the case in a planted tank.

Mark.
