I have a friend who will gladly take my convicts off my hands and put them in a very happy home. I was yelled at before for having to pink vics in my 5 gal...

I'm curious what species of fish would do well in my 5 gallon tank? I would like at least 3-4 fish if possible. If someone has a suggestion or two it's be appreciated!

Tropical/freshwater is my only stipulation..

You could get away with about 6-8 Endler's livebearers in that tank. Very pretty little fish and only grow to about an inch.

some people will probably make a fuss about this...and there right btw 5 gallon is probably too small for some of these fish. sparkling gourami, white cloud mountain minnow, rummynose tetra, beta three white clouds and two african DWARF (not clawed) frogs, dwarf puffer, take a look at the 10 gallon suggestions thread...I hate pulling this thing up MODS please consider pinning it.

I don't much like putting fish in 5 gallons. Some seem to fair pretty well but I don't know it just rubs me the wrong way. I'd prefer to setup a 5 gallon water garden with lotsa live plants, maybe some african dwarf frogs, a bunch of small shrimp, and maybe a few snails.

Space and money are kinda limited here... so I can't afford a tank I would love to have.. When I do get the space and money I'll most likely keep my eclipse tank as a sick tank.

i personally think only a betta, dwarf puffer, ADF's, shrimps, or bumblebee gobies or any of these fish are good to put into a 5gallon: http://www.franksaquarium.com/nanofish.htm (some of the smallest fish avaible) the tank is really small in the fish keeping hobby, and not many fish can live in one. i live to heavily plant my 5g wil live plants, add a few decoatrions, then 1 male betta.what i think would look good, is a well planted tank, with a shaol of bumblebee gobies and a few shrimp. but its up to you.
i wouldnt suggest putting a sparkling gourami, white cloud mountain minnow, or rummynose tetra in it as all require room to swim around and need bigger tanks.

Think I've figured out what I'm going to do.. My male Convict has been beating up on the female so it's time to move them. My friend has a 55gal with plenty of room for them both. I'm giving him my male for now. Letting the female get a little healthier and then he's taking her as well.

As far as restocking, I was thinking about the bumblebee's but a few ghost shrimp and a couple dwarf Gouramis looks promising. If I can find the bumblebee's I might get 5 of them and a few shrimp..

So my friend just came and picked up the Male... We're letting the female live by her self for a while to get her energy and health back.

she's been alone for less than an hour and is acting like the happiest fish alive. Glad shes feeling better already. Now just needs to regrow some fins..

I'd say a 5 gallon is too small for a dwarf gourami. I'd try the smaller sparkling gourami. A betta is really the best option fishwise. Again dwarf puffer, ghost shrimp, snails, other inverts, things like that are more appropriate. I definitly wouldn't put two dwarf gourami of either sec in a 5. If you do go through with the dwarf gourami then just get one. Two will probably fight and one will die.

Bumblebee Gobies prefer mildy brackish water. Some people have kept BBG's in FW but complain of them being sluggish. I don't know. I guess that's a whole other topic. Maybe you should read some of the post about them in the Brackish section. You can get a lot of info there...along with hints on how to feed them should you decide to keep them.

Just an update!

My male convict is doing amazingly in his new home. My friends 75 gallon has allowed him to be totally free. He's already found his own little spot and in hanging out with a female stripped convict about his size.

My female Convict is still in my 5 gallon tank and is already very active. She's regained all of her color. Her fins are in much better shape already. Her tail fin still has a chunk missing but it's healing. She seems larger than before. Which I've been feeding her more often but less each time to make sure she plumps back up. She's happy. I will likely be keeping her in the tank another few weeks until she's totally healed. Then she's off to a 45 gallon tank with the house mate of the guy that took my male fish.

Hopefully I'll figure out my future fish situation before then. Need to see what is in the area I suppose.
