Hi friends,
I am a novice from India. I have been wanting to keep an aquarium but get terrifed by reading postings about fish diseases. They seem very prone to diseases. If experienced people are finding it difficult to handle fish diseases, I wonder if a novice can handle them? Would some experts please advice.
Bye

It's best to start out with very hardy fish (read around on this forum for some examples of hardy fish). Hardy fish are less likely to get diseases when kept in proper conditions, which can also be read about on this forum. As you get more experience you can get more sensitive fish.

Good Luck and Welcome :hi:

Which are the Hardy fishes? Can anyone please guide me as to where I can find the list of hardy fishes. I looked around on the forum but could not find it. If this information is not available, then can some experts please provide me the names of some common hardy fishes. Thanks Thirdfloor and nelly for your replies.

The best way to prevent diseases is to find a fish store you trust to have healthy fish. Most diseases seem to be brought in from the outside but can be brought on by bad water conditions and stress. If you properly cycle your tank, don't overstock and have a good maintenancce schedule, you shouldn't have any problems with a community tank or most anyfish for that matter.

Most fishes aren't really that prone to it, although some are worse than others.

Typically, you get diseases from a new fish (just bought from a fish shop) or from poor water quality.

If a system is setup and running smoothly for a few months, you rarely see any diseases mysteriously popping up. Alot of new fishkeepers have very poor water quality, so they have alot of disease outbreaks.

Get the right fish is definitely what I would advise. Do your research on the fish you do choose to make sure they are appropriate for your tank size and compatible with each other. Ask on this forum whether the fish you want are OK and make sure to fishless cycle your tank before adding fish. Follow add and wait method from link in my sig.

:good:
