The fish is very ill, what size is the tank in gallons or litres, full stock list, do you have a test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph, do an immediate water change and turn aeration up.
Red streaking in the tail is due to bad water quality and septicemia.

Hi Wilder,

The tank is 2ft by 2ft. i dont have any kit, as they are not available out here. i have two gold fish and 1 back moor in this tank and a white tetra in a 'fish bowl'.

all the fish were fine before i left them at the pet shop for 1 week when i went was out of town. i guess they got the infection from there.

now i have changed the whole tank water and put medicine provided by the pet shop.
medicine Names - Anti-ich and white spot.

the NEW ADDITIONAL PROBLEM is that the fish seem to be eating/biting each others FINS. the gold fish has tattered fins now, lost tons of weight [i reduced the feed amt drastically].

could you tell me what more can i do to treat the infection [white spots and white hair like things growing from the skin] and [tattered fins].

i've had these fishes for more than a year now and this sight is very hard to digest. they look HORRIBLE!!...they must be going throught HELL.

PLS HELP~!!

First of goldfish are massive waste producers this is why the first goldifsh needs a 20gal, then 10gal for every other goldfish added, so if you have three goldfish you need a 40gal tank. plus excellent filters.
Right back to the fish, can you post stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, the hairs on the fish do they look like nylon with a forked tail.
Parasites can cause bacterial infections on top, and it sounds like they have bacterial finrot, are the fish nipping as sometimes fish will peck at parasites on each other.

Also parasites can cause a fish to lose weight, are they still eating well.

Does the hairs on the fish look like this.

Hi Wilder,

well... the three are swimming around but on and off rubbing itself against the stones. secondly yes, the white hair like things, look like the image you attached.

a few qs now:

- 2ft by 2ft of tank would hold how many gallons?
- the fins seem to be eaten up, tattered, why?
- how do i gather the elements of this kit [ammonia nitrate etc]. i dont have a clue of what tha means. how are these to be put in a tank.
- i do have 1 filter atleast there. do i need one more? in a 2 by 2 ft tank?

most IMP, are these fishes going to get better with regular water change? if so i can put them in anohter container and keep chaing the water for two days.

pls let meknow a fleasible solution as its quite hard to look at them suffer like this.

thanks

It's anchor worm and you will need the anti crustaceon med by interpet its very powerful and will wipe the bacteria colony out in your tank.

No 12 Anti Crustacean & Parasite 100ml
ANTI CRUSTACEAN PARASITE No 12 : Eliminates anchor
worm, fish lice, gill maggots and leeches.

Larger higher level parasites can be introduced into the aquarium on new fish or plants. They cause life-threatening damage and should be eradicated quickly.

Crustacean parasites are very difficult to eradicate so this treatment is powerful. Therefore, take care to carefully follow all instructions and note all warnings

For use with coldwater and tropical fish in marine and freshwater systems

WARNING: This treatment negatively affects biological filtration.
Damages Plants
Do not use with UV filters
Do not use below pH 6.5
For Marines, use only in separate treatment aquarium
Use only if sure of diagnosis

ABM, don't panic too much. make sure you're being careful when you're dealing with your sick fish and giving medicine as you don't want to overdose; it may sound surprising, but the medicines themselves can kill fish.

the availability of parasite medicine depends on where you live. i've heard dimilin treats anchor worm, but it might be hard to find. you can try adding some aquarium salt to your tank. it really helps.

you don't want to do 100% water changes. sometimes fish can't survive them because changing all the water gets rid of the beneficial bacteria that rid the tank of ammonia. your fish might be stressed out after all that water changing, so be careful. if your ammonia levels are really high (i guess you don't have a way of knowing if you can buy any test kits) you probably only want to do a 50% water change every other day, but if you're using medicine you'll most likely want to lessen the amount of water changes. that really depends on the directions the medicine gives you, though.

i, personally, wouldn't stop feeding the fish. they'll probably need their strength to combat this illness! since you did change all the water, i wouldn't feed them a lot but i would give them one meal a day or so.

i wish you and your fish well. please keep us posted on the condition of your fish. :)

Hi juicebox,

thanks for tat.

Actually i was quite liberal with the medicines so much so the water turned blue every time[medicine colour], until 3 days back, i stopped them, just for a change. guessed that an over does might be even verse.

what is aquarium salt?? where could i find it?

the white tetra though is horribly infected. i have shifted it to a fish bowl to avoid further infection to the other 3 fishes. i change the fish bowl water once in two days.

must try doing a 50% change of water every 4 days in the main tank. might help i think. will medicate the water very little. lets see.

serioulsy...never knew fishes could get infection from anything or everything. after all they are in captivity.

will keep updating and hopefully can post healthy pics of the beauties soon.!
regards,
ABM

Yes most lfs should sell that interpet med, they look in bad shape, also bacterial infections are common on top, and yours have a bacterial infection, can see a red sore on the fins, fingers crossed and good luck.

I would leave the salt till the med is over with, and add the salt with the bacterial med, one tablespoon to five gal, if no aquarium salt house hold salt is fine, add it gradually though not in one full dose.

hi wilder,

thanks so much...yes they sure are in terrible shape, thus the concern. Also, the white tetra which was horribly infected died this morning. its a pity.

one IMP qs - Can i pull out hese fork like things, manually [using a plucker]? will that help to heal faster? i just cannot see these things growing on teh skin more and more. its very troubling.

just let me know this one thing...can i pull them out manually?

regards,
ABM

yes, you can pull them out using tweezers/pluckers. they are actually anchorworm eggs layed by the female(s).

the brand of aquarium salt i use is called "doc wellfish's aquarium salt." it should be sold at most pet stores. and wilder's right, you should probably add the salt once the medications are done.

hope your fish get well and i'm sorry to hear about your tetra dying!
