I have a female swordtail with a crooked spine. She can still swim and eat the other fish are fine except my twin barred platy died of dropsy and the water readings are normal too. Could it be fish TB and will the other fish be affected?

hi im gonna put ur mind at rest ur fish dont or most likely do not have fish tb

fish tb is common in marine aquariums but in fresh water you have a 1 in 1000000 chance of getting it

all your fish will be infected and all will be showing these signs not just one but most of the signs

1. lethargic
2.loss of appetite
3.shrunken belly / wasted away look/ skinny so you can see bones!
4.fleshy look on skin (as if rotting)
5.white stringy poop
6.bent spine (most fish will have this as they are in pain causing them to hunch their back giving a bent spine look)
7. major panting for air
8.dropsy
9.pop eye
10.blisters & sores

if your fish more then four of these symptoms i would take some concern these symptoms must be in one fish not all fish added up so one fish must have atleast four symptoms before you concern your self

if they do have these symptoms take GOOD CARE of your self as this disease will affect you causeing blisters up your arms normally to the elbow this disease is treatable in humans but not fish

TB med for human tb cures it in humans but not such meds exist in fish so tbh i personally dont think your tank has fish tb

The least likely cause would be fish TB. Dropsy can cause crooked spines and as you've already had one with dropsy that might be the more likely cause. There are other causes though, for example, old age, vitamin deficiency, constipation, intestinal parasite and giving birth. Do any of those fit? Does the swordtail show any other abnormal signs, either physical or behavioural? Poor water quality is usually the precursor to things like dropsy so you need to check yours. What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?

She collapsed last night on her side so I killed her and my lyretail swordtail who was gasping for breath at the bottom of the tank. :-(

Yeh deffinetly not ftb it does sound like a water thin how old are ur test kits?? Also as if old may be getting a fulse reading

Chances are your water quality is poor then.
I checked everything and it was normal but I am going to do a 50% water change tomorrow to be sure.

I'm guessing that you don't have a liquid test kit. You really need one to be sure your water quality is perfect. Look on eBay for the API master test kit. And yes keep up with those water changes until you get your kit.

I do have API liquid test kits. :(

So what are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH? Have any of your other fish had problems since?

The home tests I used were inaccurate so I went to Bensens to get my water tested EVERYTHING WAS OFF THE CHARTS. D: How do I fix it?

Oh my!!!!!!!! This seems to be your problem then. I'd do a as close to 100% as you can get while leaving the fish room to swim water change right away. they will prolly all have ammonia and nitrite poisoning and nitrates would be dangerously high. What's the ph because how is that off the charts? You should buy a new kit then and scrap the old one.

I bought all new test kits and the Ph said 7.6 but I am thinking its higher, the ammonia is 0.25 and the nitrates is 80. I feel like a bad fish mommy especially since two fish died of dropsy. :(
