Perhaps not rare, but certainly much less common and are sought after by those who keep these fish. Wild fish tend to have much less red coloration, generally just on the caudal fin, but they have been bred selectively to get more red into them. Without getting into genetics, it's not an easy task.
I'm new to this species myself, I've only have mine (1m/2f) for a few months and I'm in love with these fish. Tons of personality and very entertaining to watch. Your females will develop very distinct black and bright yellow marking when the get "in the mood". They are just as striking in appearance as the males IMO.
