hey ive got a mature external filter if i move it to my new aqurium with the fish will it all be okay, as long as water is the same? cheers

It should be fine, as long as the filter is moved directly from one tank to another. It cannot dry out, or be without oxygenated water, for a long period. I'd take 50% of the old water, too...

The old water has little to no bacteria in it. If you wanted to be absolutely sure that nothing goes wrong, i would take some old gravel( as much as you can get) and put it in a plastic container with slots on it, and they hold bacteria aswell. But i would imagine the filter would have enough bacteria to handle the load, but you never know. The only good old water would be doing you is saving you money by not having to add more water in the new tank, and not using as much dechlor.

I was actually thinking of other considerations, other than bacteria, when I suggested taking half of the old water. Using all new would be like doing a 100% water change, which I would not recommend, as it will stress the fish and the bioload.

Yea, not only can fish stress from to much of a water change but bateria can stress from it too.

Take a generous amount of water from the old tank with you too.

hey cheers for the info one more question ive got three baby cichlids what are the chances of survival?

I'd say, pretty good. Cichlids are tough. Just make sure you have the ph matched to what they are used to....

I'd say it depends on how big they are now and if they stay out of the way of the adult ones.

If you have any catfish, they'll try to eat them also.
