I think he's bored. He used to be in a community tank and ever since I moved him (due to the neon tetras nipping his fins), he has started tail-biting. He's been on his own for a good couple of months now and his tail just isn't growing back. I've even seen him trying to nip at it. I think he is bored and maybe even lonely.

What can I put in with him that won't nip at him and won't mind the small space? I don't have the opportunity to give him more space - I have too many tanks as it is. He's got places to hide and plants (although I'll get him a few more).

I want his fins to grow back =( he was such a pretty boy.

ive found that with tailbiters the best thing to do is give them a permanent mirror on their tank. that helps to redirect aggression away from themselves. also, snails are great fun for bettas. they can stare at them, follow them and flare at them. all my betta tanks have trumpet snails to turn the sand and apple/mystery (same snail) snails. my one boy spends HOURS following them aroun d and flaring at them.
also, each time you do a water change, rearrange some things in the tank...keeps things interesting for them.
just my 2 cents.
cheers

He's in a divided tank so if he wants to flare, he can. Might look into getting a mirror to put next to him, though.

Snails are on my 'to buy' list =)

He does get the tank rearranged and he's still doing it, grr!

Try a few shrimp, Cherry shrimp. it will take the betta some time to get used to them. There may be slight flaring but after a few days they should be fine. :)
