I've usually used corydoras or barbs to cycle a tank... and in most of the cases I left them in there after adding the fish I wanted.

This is my first time doing a convict tank, and from what I understand, the convicts would pretty much destroy the corys or the barbs.

I could decide to move them to a different tank, or use a different species of fish to cycle.

Anyone have any recommendations for a 29g tank?

When I cycle a tank I always use these fish a lot of other people do it as well I usually add 4 or 5 ammonia each day till the filter can handle it :good:

Sorry to be sarcastic! But yeah do a fishless cycle! Its so easy and cheaper than having to risk loosing fish in the process. Cories can cost like £2-£3 each so even if you got 6 that s £12-£18 for them and realistically in the cycle you could loose all of them.

Have a look in the beginners resource center and have a read through :) Trust me it really is easy just add in a few ml of pure ammonia each day for a few weeks and when the ammonia and nitrite goes to 0 in 12 hours your done it usually take about 3-4 weeks but if you use some of the sponges from your existing tanks it can take much much less time :good:
