I have a problem, and I've realized this since my first summer of fishkeeping. No A/C upstairs, and my bedroom is the prime spot for the sun most of the day, which in the morning, shines right on the tank...At first I had an algae problem but I got that taken care of, and now I'm on a mission to find more compatible fish for my tank. I've realized that cories really dont like hpt water, as I've lost 5 in the last month, and they were the only ones that got affected in my tank really.
I have a 40 gallon tank with
2 Platy
4 Cherry Barbs
1 Opaline Gourami
1 German Ram
1 Bristlenose Plec
(But he only has spots on him, still very small so I'll have to identify him later)

All these fish seem to do fine in the temp, that gets to almost 84F in the afternoon. They are all active, eating, and the barbs are mating like crazy (But I never see any fry)

Any good suggestions to what fish I could try, that can take the heat ok
...I really liked the cories but I'd rather wait till winter to go back to those

Increase aeration alot in the tank, as the hot weather will reduce 02 in the tank, keep tank lights off, use a fan in the room to keep the room cooler.
I wouldn't bother adding cooler water to the tank it just stresses the fish out with the temp being up and down.

The lid has been off, I'm doing a water change every other day (very small ones, its mostly taking water out then topping up what has evaporated) my bedroom fan is on high 24/7, and I'm keeping the window wide open, and curtains closed when its sunny. The other fish are fine like I said, so I just wanted to see what options for fish I have now, because the tank is so bare :(

If you have an airstone and pump get it going in the tank.
The thing with having the lid off is that the fish could jump out.

Yeah, I know that, and I have kept the water level lower, so I cansee the filter making bubbles, but not too much that the fish are stressed by the current.. I also have the heater on higher, around 79-80F so that it doesnt go down too much at night, if thats a good idea??

Lol well I've never had that before, and I do daily inventory on all 9 of them, so I hope that doesnt happen :| Cuz I dont think I can leave it on as thats what keeps alot of heat in I noticed

if your looking for a bottom feeder the clown loaches love the heat as long as the temp doesn't fluctuateand there is plenty of oxygen they will love it, other than that most amazonians like heat, angels, apistos, tetras.

84 is nothing to worrie about how hot do you think it gets in the wild this time of year

my tank is HOT 89-91 and im doing water changes of 25% every other day

Water in the wild is in larger bodies so does not heat and cool as quickly as a tank that only holds X amount of gallons. Plus, the fish we keep in aquariums are seldom native to our own climates. They each have their own temperature requirements. If your tank is at 84 or 90 deg. and your fish are from an area that never gets that hot, then taking measures to keep the temperature down is certainly a good idea. I can't think of many bodies of water that ever actually get that warm.

I was able to cool my tank from 85F to 77F with a fan blowing across the top with my glass covers off...I am going to get a smaller (5-8 inch) clip on fan to put on my tanks during hot weather....

FYI: if you've got your heart still set on cories, there are some species which are better suited to high-temp environments than others. i can't recall them off the top of my head, but Inchworm always has a few good recommendations for discus tanks (which are typically kept at or near the temp of you 40g).

i would think that anything well-suited to being kept with discus can handle the summer temperature in your tank. (their suitability for the other conditions may be up for debate ;) )
