hello i have seen a few topics of people who are concerned with fish Tb first of all ill be going through the symptoms, then i will discus the occurrence of the disease, then i will go through treatment and control.

okay first of all fish TB is quite rare in fresh water fish tanks (its is common in marine tanks) so if you are a fresh water fish keeper there is a tiny chance of your tank catching the disease (although it is possible) the chance of a fresh water tank contracting this disease is 1 in 1000000 chance there hasn't been a case of fish TB in the uk since 1960 ! so there is little chance anyway here are the symptoms :

fish tb is common in marine aquariums but in fresh water you have a 1 in 1000000 chance of getting it

all your fish will be infected and all will be showing these signs not just one but most of the signs

1. lethargic
2.loss of appetite
3.shrunken belly / wasted away look/ skinny so you can see bones!
4.fleshy look on skin (as if rotting)
5.white stringy poop
6.bent spine (most fish will have this as they are in pain causing them to hunch their back giving a bent spine look)
7. major panting for air
8.dropsy
9.pop eye
10.blisters & sores
11. noodles on the skin
12. listless behaviour

these are the symptoms of fish TB, if your tank is infected most of these symptoms will be there (please be aware some of these symptoms are also in white spot (ich))

occurrence of the disease:

The disease is passed through infected matter from a dead fish or freshwater shellfish other fish have to eat the infected matter of the infected fish to become infected their self, other ways the disease can be passed along is through birth of live bearing fish such as platies, now healthy fish may harbour the disease but never show signs off illness, so an outbreak of this disease may occur when the infected fish is exposed to poor water quality thus creating the signs of the disease this fish should be removed before a fish gets a chance to nibble on him.

Treatment and control:

buying apparently healthy stock and caring for these fish correctly will help prevent this disease, naturally it is important not to feed other animals or fish, fish from an infected source (dead or alive), it is difficult to determine if a fish is suffering from this disease as it will hide itself until bacterial number have increased (like virus's) if any fish is suspected of having this disease they must be immediately removed from the other stock so to prevent other fish from becoming infected. if a fish or a whole stock is infected with this disease it is important to stop the suffering by humanly euthanize them painlessly and quickly ( DO NOT FREEZE FISH TO PUT THE TO SLEEP THIS IS PAINFUL AND UNCOMFORTABLE TO THEM)

conclusion:

if your fish more then four of these symptoms i would take some concern these symptoms must be in one fish not all fish added up so one fish must have atleast four symptoms before you concern your self

if they do have these symptoms take GOOD CARE of your self as this disease will affect you causeing blisters up your arms normally to the elbow this disease is treatable in humans and normaly take a year to treat but no treatment in fish exist

TB med for human tb cures it in humans but not such meds exist in fish.

hope this helps anyone out there who is concerned about fish tb in their tanks :)
