I bought 2 skirt tetras and 2 neons for my 50 gallon tank. The next day the skirt tetras tail turned white and the day after that it was gone completely then latter died. Since then it has infected all of my other fish. It has killed 1 guppy, 2 skirt tetras, 1 gourami, and a platty. Another gourami platty and skirt tetra are currently infected.
The list of fish were/are in this tank are;
Pleco
Small catfish
2 platties
2 gouramis
Guppy
Ghost catfish
2 skirt tetras
Fish that were added
2 neons
2 skirt tetras

I drained 50% of the water then added a bacterial/fungal medicine and removed filter carbon also added salt 1 tsp per 2 gallons of water. Ph is between 7.0 - 7.5
Is there anything else I can do? Seams like once the fish gets infected they lose there tail and are dead in a day.
Thanks.

Hi there, How long have you had your tank for? Your stock is pretty much all over the place as well. You sound half overstocked and half with fish that will bug other fish.

It sounds like you got finrot and yes it will spread through your tank and kill off the fish, I suggest looking for finrot treatment.

The tank has been setup for about a year now. The medicine I bought says it treats fin rot. Will it most likely go through my whole tank and kill everything?

If your already treating for fin rot make sure you do as the bottle says and it should clear up. If it fails try a different brand.

fin rot is a tricky tricky thing. It can be the main cause, and sometimes caused from something else entirely. I agree with techen, sometimes if one med doesnt work, try a different one that treats different illnesses along with the fin rot. GL!

Could you reccomend a good brand? I used the jungle brand. It's only been 2 days but it seams to have no affect.

there's triple sulfa, API fungus cure.. again though, the triple sulfa treats bacterial infections and the fungus cure treats a fungal cure. So it depends on what is causing the fin rot, so it's tricky. I don't think there's anyway to find out if it's fungal or bacterial unless you have a microscope lol. So I would try one and if you don't make any progress, try another. If one makes progress but doesn't seem to do it all the way, do the same treatment process again.

Use the green dye treatement. Increase heater to 30 and do water changes 3 times during the next week as the medicine is powerful. The green dye treats all! Its called Myxazin and is for fin rot ick and many other infections. I use it now to treat new fish before add to my tank as i has same experience as you. Good luck

I just bought a test kit.
Ph 7
Ammonia: between 0 and .25
Nitrite: .25
Nitrate: between 80 and 160

Nitrate seams real high this is the first test I have ever done. What should these readings be?

All of your readings are too high. Ammonia and nitrites need to be t 0, always. Your nitrates are high too. Some medications cause spikes though, bc they kill all the good bacteria in your filter. Anything that contains, "victoria 5"?? I think, that's what it is. I try and stay away from those. the last thing you need is ammonia poisoning. Do big water changes until the ammonia and nitrites are down to 0. GL!
