I tried to do a barb and Cory tank, but the barb part failed miserably. I am currently down to 3/9 of them, so I will probably take those back to the store. I feel like one is always chasing the rest until he picks them off. Not the water as I have been checking it and the cories are all great.

Any other suggestions for a 29 gallon tank, soft water, can maintain high temps?

What corys do you have as most prefer lower temps?

78 isn't particularly high or are looking to increase the temp? Peppered corys in particular should be kept ideally below 76
Whats the length of the tank?

It is a 30” and 12” wide.

the tank is also not planted

No I was not going to increase the temp since the cories like it colder I forgot about them at first.

I've no experience with the Gourami but the info on SF does suggest you'll be ok with regards to size of tank and if your water is soft.

Agree with PheonixKing, be good to get a few more corydoras, make their numbers up to 10 or 12

I will check if my LFS has them. If not I will see how much they would be if I ordered them like I ordered my PB parrot

If you are now considering the Chocolate Gourami, Sphaerichthys osphromenoides, you are getting into some very sensitive husbandry. It needs warmth, higher than cories can manage long-term. It needs very soft and acidic water (no idea what the actual GH and pH are here). And even when provided with an excellent habitat, it is prone to skin issues and highly sensitive to water quality issues. I have had a group of this fish twice, and spawned them (they are maternal mouthbrooders) But both times after a few years something happened and they quickly wasted away.

If you're after a more peaceful shoaling fish (seeing as the barbs were trouble), then perhaps some Lemon tetra, or black widow tetra. If you'll only be keeping one other species alongside the corys then theres serpae tetra too (theyre a bit more fin nippy)
All these tetra will be ok at same temp as corys

Do you think I would be able to keep a batch of guppies (like 10)? I believe they should be fine at 78 degrees
