Hi All,
63 gallon tank is cycling,to add to it I have 10 neons and 2 Bronze Corydoras, when it is all cycled.

So I am looking for some knowledge on how many fish I could get away with,I have no problem of doing regular water chnages if I was to overstock a bit.

I would like to add more corys and Rummy nose tetras on top of what I already have,I have done some reading, but there seems to be a difference in opinion on how many fish to keep, tank will be planted, trickle filter doing 1000 ltrs hr and wavemaker/circulating water doing 1500 ltrs hr as well.

LFS has asked me how many fish I will be looking at as they would do some form of discount if I was to buy all fish from them,I do not intend adding them all in one hit.

I know this has been probably been asked umpteen dozen times, but if I can get a general consensus, then I know what I would be looking for once tank is good.

Thank you all.

So what opinions have you got already? What fish do you like and want to keep? Just small stuff? No feature fish? When you say planted, how planted? A thick jungle of plants or a couple of amazon swords each end? More info required....you are correct, its a very mundane line of conversation to answer for the bazillionth time. :)

True, it's been asked a ton of times, but it remains a central question the answer to which can make or break a tank.
You can keep more than a few neons and a couple cory for sure. 63 gallons is a sizable tank.
Tizer's questions are a great start.

I hear what you are saying Tizer,it is a mundane question, but from what I have been looking up a lot of people also have feature fish, where I am just going to keep neons,Rummy Nose and the corydoras,so their amount of fish have been (the likes of tetras) reduced to allow for their larger feature fish.

Planted wise, more anubias plants than stemmed plants, stemmed plants consist of wisteria in one corner and contorstionist vall in another, mainly to hide heater etc.

I do have some small java fern going,so if they do take off, I would keep one or two of them also, reason for the lack of extensive planting, is most of the tank is taken up by large driftwood, some rock caves for corydoras and another rock structure in the corner.

So I would say it is not a jungle type tank.

Thank you for the replies Tizer and tcamos.

i'll put some money on the table and bet that you will get bored one day and decide to get some bigger feature fish......everyone does ;)

Lol yeah that would probably happen, but I am still looking on what the max is I can stock with the tetras and corydoras. :D

going out on a limb, with decent filtration and water movement, i wouldn't think twice (meaning i would stock) about stocking 100 neons/rummys or fish of similar size and 25 corys on the bottom, gobbing around. That size school of fish would look awesome. BUT, the footprint of the tank plays an important part, i would want it to be at least 5 foot long, otherwise you simply wont see the fish schooling at their best.

ooh a shoal of 30 odd neons would be beeeeauutiful. can i come gaze at your tank?

Tizer that would be awesome with that amount of fish,I got interested in the Rummy nose as I saw a tank with 20 odd in schooling and it just drew me in,unfortunately my tank comes in at 3 ft 2 inches x 18 inches wide and 2 ft in depth,I would be happy with even 30 if it was viable, bmonki you will have to come to Australia if i was to put 30 in.Though there is a Croydon in Oz??

less is more ;)
Amen to that!
I also must say that I like the micro fish and smaller tetras rather than large fish. Even in my reef tank I don't have anything really huge. I like the feeling of scale that small fish give.

I cant see a problem with 30 myself but with more height and less surface area, 25 corys would be too much, a dozen would look about right, but of the same species, dont mix and match corys.

This would still leave you room for a large pair of "feature" fish or just something like a trio of Bolivian Rams would look nice too. Plain, simple and hardy fish.

not the one in oz unfortunately... but i deserve a holiday!

Thank you for the input everyone,I will work on the 30 tetras plus the corys, thank you Tizer,I will go do some reading on the Bolivian Rams,I appreciate the compromise to allow me some feature fish at a later date. :thanks:
