Fish Spinning And Corkscrewing

24 hours later and no improvement. In fact, i think they're doing worse today. It must be the meds, so I'm flushing out the prazi with activated carbon and will just stick with the Tetracycline. I'm watching parameters like a hawk and can change out the filter to a seeded one once the tetra has been flushed from the tank.

Two of the loaches have developed a snowflake patterns on their back in the last two days. It looks to be a skin change and it is not raised or fuzzy in any way. Two other loaches are stuck swimming in circles.

One of the discolored loaches has developed (overnight mind you) severe deformities along his length and now looks like this ~ with his head bent at one angle and his tail straight out the back. I picked him up with my hands and I think it is bent spine.

I am PRAYING it's not TB!!!!!!!!

Does anything else cause deformities like that????

Bent spine can be caused by vitamin deficiency, old age, injury, birth defect, internal parasites, fish tb.

Spinning can be a sign of toxins, internal parasites, the fish is dying, swim bladder, ph shock.

Since using the med have you noticed any dead worms in your tank water or substrate.

Going to read the whole thread again.

Can you post a pic of the white on the fish.
Does it look like joined up spots, or a talc dusting, or cotton wool.

I want you to list each type of fish and there symtoms.
That's if you don't mind.

I wanted to add an update in case anyone ever has the same problems in the future and finds this thread.

I actually discontinued ALL medication on my last post (on the 6th of November). The loaches were going into toxic shock from just the antibiotics and I did not feel it was worth it to continue to stress them.

On the advice of a veterinarian who used to work for a couple of aquariums and zoos (sadly with marine fish and mammals, not fresh), I started doing small daily water changes. This seems to have done the trick!

Over the last couple of weeks all of the affected loaches have straightened out and I have had no more deaths! As I type now they are back to acting like their normal goofy selves. :) No more curling and corkscrewing - and the ones I last took photos of are still alive and I can't even tell them apart from the others now. :)

All together I lost 7 of my 13 kuhli loaches. The remaining 6 have been behaving normally for past four days, and I truly believe that whatever was affected them is over. We're now starting to consider what to restock the tank with, and I plan on beginning by adding a few more kuhlis slowly over time.

Wish I could have found out what was going on though. The vet I talked to offered to send off any more dead fish for laboratory testing, but since none had died after that the exact cause still remains a mystery.

Thats great news!
What is your species of Khuli Loach? :good:

Just read through this topic and just wanted to say I'm sorry that you lost so many fish :( Totally baffling!

On the positive side it's great news that they're doing well now :D

Thanks for the update.
Glad the fish seem to be recovering.
Sometimes it not so easy getting to the problem.

If you have anymore deaths I would take the offer from the vet to have a fish laboratory tested.

Good Luck.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and help! :)

Carlove1 - I had two Eel Kuhli (pangio doriae) that I found as contaminates, but neither mad it past their six month mark with me and died months ago. I had one striped kuhli (pangio kuhli) that died at the beginning of whatever this was that happened - it was the only striped one that I found in six years of looking! The other 12 were a mix of black kuhlis (pangio oblonga) and (pangio filinaris). I believe that only the oblongas survived though. The other loach that also survived is a species of pangio, but I have yet to figure out what. :) He's dark grey on top and shiny copper on the bottom and is not like any of the other kuhlis that I've ever had.

Wilder - the vet's number is pretty much on speed-dial from now on. :)

I found a pet shop that may be able to order in striped kuhlis for me. :) They're placing an order for 6 Kuhli Loach (as opposed to the other listing of Black Kuhli) the next time they get a delivery from their distributer. I could have had them delivered for Wednesday, but I thought that was just a little too soon to try. So within the next several weeks I should be getting new fish, straight from the supplier to my quarantine tank. :)
