I got baby fish about august last year yet they are only about the same size as neon tetras. How do I make them grow or do they just grow slowly?

SWORDTAILS!!!

It sounds like their growth has been stunted,This could have been poor diet or water conditions whilst they were fry.they should be coming up to nearly the size of an adult swordtail by now.

is it true that if `fish feel cramped they stunt there own growth?

if it is maybe you are overstocked?

hopefully someone will say if its true or not :)

Fish normally do grow much faster than that. The way to get them growing is the same as the way that could have been used when they were very small. Feed them generously and do tons of large water changes to remove anything that may be inhibiting their growth. Although they will not grow as quickly as they would have when younger, you can definitely recover much of the growth that has been lost.

he was right. thats why they only live a couple of years in small tanks. their organs outgrow their outer frame.

so fish do stunt there own growth if not in a tank big enough for them?

Ash

Not sure if its true for every kind of fish, but yes.

Your fish are indeed stunted by the conditions that they find in their tanks, Ashley. That in no way makes their condition permanent. Instead it means that the fish in your tank have failed to show their full potential. If you now give them the conditions that promote their proper growth, they will respond by growing much bigger.
