Hey guys, I hope you are all well!

so ive had a couple of fish die over the last couple of months and I went to go and get some more to fill the tank back up this evening but was told my tank is at its max and I was refused anymore fish... I think it’s strange as the same company allowed me to walk out the shop with more fish than I now have!

I have a 24L tank with 2 mate guppies and 4 cardinal tetras and I did have 7 tetras and 4 guppies. My tank isn’t overloaded with plants and accessories and it certainly was not over crowded. My fish were happy all together but now they seem lonely and the tank looks empty.

Please could someone give me a hand in figuring out if the gent at the shop was right or if he was being difficult.

My water is fine I check it often and also change it.

I have attached a photo of my tank for you guys to see :)

TIA

24L isnt a lot roughly 5 Gallon, So 4 Cardinals is the absolute max i would put in, I know the cardinals should have a bit bigger tank but think they will be ok without the guppies.
Adding the Guppies is almost certainly overstocked. Or adding the 4 Cardinals whichever. If your not planning to upgrade your tank i would consider 1 species or the other but i really would not add any more fish to that tank
The reason the other fish has died is probably cos it was overstocked in the first place. 4 Guppies in a 5 Gall is prob ok but together with 7 tetras is pushing it. The bioload would be a lot considering the tank size. So i would say that is what has killed them, i know you say you have tested water stats etc etc but the tank can have a spike anytime which will kill a healthy fish in a few hours

My daughter likes the tank theme by the way. She likes the unicorn. If it was me i would take the Guppies out & just keep the cardinals you have in there already.
Thankyou for your advice. I’m quite annoyed really as I was sold 10 fish all in 1 go while they knew how big my tank was. I did have a fighter which ate 5 of my cardinals and then sadly passed away the day after so I got 6 cardinals to go with the survivor and 4 guppies and was told that was the absolute Max. Now the same place has told me that I now have the max which is 6 fish and cannot have anymore in. Tbh the fish do seem a lot happier in there now.

the tank is in my sisters room and she’s near 6 and chose the unicorns! She loves it ahha
