Hi,
My brother came down today and decided I was to be his 4 Sterbais Cory's new mummy! Lovely for me as I have recently lost 4 of mine (ironically) as I seemingly bought a bad batch and they all got wiped out, developing huge holes in different places before dying :(

Anyway! After realeasing them into my tank and watching to see if they mingled with my 2 remaining Sterbais I noticed that one has no right fin! He seems to be. Good size, as big as my fully grown adult Sterbai, but I dont know how long my brother has had them so couldn't say how old it is. He doesn't seem to be phased by his disability but I just wondered a few things:

Can fish survive normally with missing fins?
Does it reduce their life expectancy?
Are they more susceptible to disease?
Will it grow back like a tail fin would?

My brother will be getting rid of his tank shortly as his bigger fish have all died now over time and he is moving house and doesn't want the bother of the tank. I have first pick over his remaining fish and really want his Pentazone barbs. I was wondering also wether these are compatible with Angels, Rams and Gouramis? He says they are perfectly peaceful and stick to their own little corner but he only had a Betta as his most aggressive fish so just wanted to make sure before I adopt them :p

Thanks.

fins normally heal and grow back....if that is your question?

I had a Sterbai cory for 5 years that only had a stumpy/half a right fin, it was called Nemo :p never had any problems though!

That was one of my questions yes Mikey1!
Yeah I can see a slight 'stump' of some kind. My brother seems to be oblivious that he has a finless fish!! Shows how much attention he pays haha.
I have a neon tetra with a dodgy fin as well and he really struggles with it. How he hasn't died of exhaustion I don't know. He really over compensates and swims upward rather than horizontally like normal. He still eats fine though, I just don't kno how he hasn't given up!

I've got a nice shoal of pentazonas, they have lived with angels and my opaline gourami for years with no issues.  I think that they are supposed to be less nippy than tiger barbs and keep any nipping within the shoal.  That fits with my experience too :)

Ahh hopefully they should be fine then. He only has 3 so I think I will get a further 4 to add to them so they have a bigger shoal. He has had his for a couple of years now so they are quite old.

I don't know their normal lifespan.  I know mine have made it through 2 tank moves (you know, the little first tank with some nice fish that you massively overstock cos you don't know what youre doing, to the bigger tank then to the 'yeah I really like this, lets have a tank as the centerpiece of the room tank...).  I must have had them for 4 years... They're cool fish :)

Haha, that was exactly my process! Started with a Fluval Edge, upped to a 70 litre, had that for around 4 months and settles with a 125 litre =P<br />Well I am picking them up tomorrow so we shall see how they get on!

Got them in just and they seem to be settling in fine! They have chosen to congregate under my bog wood cave in a little huddle, venturing out then scurrying back into the cave haha. They have coloured up well too, so at least they can't feel too stressed!

Also inherited a few more neon tetras a tiny baby Platy and one solitary Rummy Nose tetra that I was persuaded to have out of guilt. Tank is definitely looking fuller, and after a few more Pentazones are added to up the numbers I think I am fully stocked!!
