Fish Mating

Just curious.. Because I have 1 male and 1 female molly in my tank. I was wondering if they will mate, and how you would be able to tell?

Can you tell with fish? or do the eggs just appear one day? I know mollie's give live birth (well, I've read..) and I only have a 10 gal, so just wondering in case I have to make any changes or keep an eye out.

Most likely they will breed, you can tell that she is preganat when she gets a really big stomach

Breeding livebearers is like making instant soup - just add water. A male will harass a female until she relents. That's why the normal recommendation is at least 2 females for every male. Preferably 3.

I only have 1 female.. and 1 male.. should I get more females so that she is not his only sex slave? or will she be okay?

LOL she will be ok but she will be alot more ok if you get another two or three females - the one male can only harrass one female at a time thus giving the others a bit of a rest and time to eat and chill

you should probably add some more but considering that they can get to 4 inches long and you only have a ten gallon tank IMO i think you shouldnt do it wouldnt do it

That's true, too. Forgot about the tank size - I am used to my own big tanks and assume everyone else has the same

yeah alot of people on here have very large tanks, like snake007, s/he is about to get a 900 gallon tank

I have 3 two foot tanks and a small 20 litre tank. I am badly wanting to either buy or make a 5 foot tank and get rid of two of the two foot tanks. Tho I doubt I will actually get rid of them. They will float about outside until I end up putting something in them

IMO there is no fish more horny more of the time than a male swordtail. I honestly think they would try to spawn with a rock if they could figure out how.

Its happening so long from now because of moving house.
It going to get mad around here with the Olympics around the corner.
Til then, tanks on hold.

May I suggest you either put her on the pill or get him a vasectomy. Other than that you will need to find the Dr Barnardos of the fish world!!
