dont trust pet shops for anything
dont keep male and female bettas together
dont add any more fish
buy yourself a test kit, and test for yourself

can we have some symptoms please?

What Blubble said, and it'd probably be good to know your tank size & it's inhabitants. Did the shop use liquid or paper strips?
Can you get them to give you an exact reading, with numbers? Not just "It's fine" At least in the mean time until you can buy yourself a kit.

Sorry you're having a stressful time!

to TFF btw! Hope you enjoy it here.

buying a good test kit and doing it yourself is easy and well worth the money, you would have results right  in front of you right now and more precise help to aid the problem.

did they give you any of the following or just say water is ok?

ammonia level?
nitrite level?
ph?
nitrate level?

what about water changes?
