Fish Insurance

Excuse me Mr Insurance salesman. I want to insure my neon tetra.
How many do you have?
Just 1.
Ok that'll be $300 thanks.
Holy C-rap Batman

My sister used to work for a pet insurence company and they did have people insuring koi carp, but then we are talking about individual fish valued in the multiple thousands of pounds/dollars. I guess if you did have tropicals worth the same ammounts they would probably insure them but only a handfull of species would come into this category, such as extreemly rare arowana morphs like the platinum Asian arowana or South American "snow" arowana, even fish that we class as rare and/or expensive such as zebra plecs and tigrinus shovelnoses are relatively cheap fish when compared to certain strains of koi.

I've read about some expensive fish having chips fitted similar to the ones cats and dogs get for insurance reasons but they are expensive fish like big Koi and arowana. I think if you wanted to insure any fish the insurance company would want a chip fitting which just wouldn't be possible for smaller fish and probably not worth the expense for cheaper fish. Plus I think they are only covered for theft not accidental death, which the insurance company would probably class as an act of god and wouldn't pay out.

I did try to insure £5000 worth of fish I have in one tank and no insurance companies I spoke to would even consider it, including pet insurance places. That's not to say you can't get it done but it aint easy either...

I think I saw a commercial recently about an insurance company offering pet insurance. I think it was nationwide or progressive. I wonder what they do with fish.
