So, I have just been looking at my tanks and totting up the value of their inhabitants and I started wondering if there is any way of insuring them. Obviously I'm not talking single fish policies as that'd be silly ... (well, that is unless you have Adult Zebra Plecs or the expensive marines I suppose), but I was wondering if there are any policies that would cover an entire collection say in case of flood/fire/poisoning etc.
I think the tanks are covered by the household contents policies but I don't think that would cover the inhabitants or would it....I imagine there'd have to be a load of rules if it existed but Google didn't help much so wondered if anyone here had heard of anything???

i cant help but it sounds good but just incase of flood fire etc etc i have a spare really light with and with out water in it also has a light lid so i can get them out and run lol :D

sounds good, only it'd be typical, the one day you want them thats when they all hide...

Lloyd's of London will ensure anything for the right amount of money. I'm not thinking that the insurance is really worth it, but I am sure that you can find someone somewhere willing to ensure your fish for the right premium.

Yeah thanks tho I'm not really worried to that extent....it was more curiousity really as there must be hundreds of people spending a small fortune on what I was introduced to a few years ago as a nice 'cheap' hobby.

Its a good idea but doubt you would get it for a good price as they would be classed as a risk. I have over £2k worth of fish in 1 tank lol.

yea me:get here fishiekins
fish:no get lost
me:well theres a fire
fish:come on lets hide shes crazy

dont ask y my fish talk lol and yes i do talk 2 my fish:D

Most insurance companies won't touch livestock. Some farming insurance companies will do policies on stud animals but I haven't found any company willing to insure fish. They are considered difficult to keep alive and not worthy of insuring.
Most house and contents insurance won't cover them either. Tried that one years ago when we lost a heap of stock to thieves that cleaned out the fishroom. The insurance company said prove you had the fish. We did that. Then they said prove they got stolen. We could prove a burglary had happened but could not prove the fish had been taken. Even though we didn't have the fish and the door had been smashed in they said we could be doing a false claim to get money for fish that died.
We found the fish a couple of weeks later. They were in a fish shop on the other side of the country. The Police said prove they were my fish. I said they are black fin pacu and the only ones in the country. The officer asked how we knew they were the only ones in the country and I replied "because they are illegal imports and we smuggled them in" :)

If I owned an insurance company I wouldn't insure fish (or if I did not cheaply). Just think how much it costs to insure your car. Then think how many times you crash your car. Now think how often you have a fish die. See my point?

I know you (probably) have more fish than cars but if you had 1 car and 1 fish...

so the best bet is to buy a house on a hill, put batteries in the smoke alarms, a no poisoning sign in the fish tanks and have a stern word with fishes to make them promise not to die....guess that's doable..... :/

Now if only those pesky plecs would line up so I can have a talk with them.

I'm sure I've heard of people insuring expensive carp from theft from ponds before. Probably a very pricey premium though.

You can insured against being abducted by aliens though, if you are interested in that? (I kid ye not)

Hmm I should look into that. I get abducted every night. Hence the reason I am on here all night. They don't get me when I'm awake :)

Apparently 35,000 Americans were insured against being abducted by aliens in 1994. The figure is much higher now but I forget how high.
I wonder if any successful claims have been made?

lol
sounds like the aliens are selling insurance now. They have to raise funds to build their ship to carry them back home :)

lmao
i believe it is possible to insure larger more expensive fish such as koi or RTC. Not really worth it for your average community fish though..
