This is now week 5 and todays results -same past 4 days are:

Ammonia 0.25
Nitrate <0.3
PH 8.0

I have not lost any fish for a week, and did a 30% water change on Wednesday.I have noticed that there is a brown colour appearing on plants and sand base?
Plus green algae on the sides of the tank.I feed the fish a small amount daily and feed the plants weekly with Vitakraft Flora-sin e.I also after each water change add Tetra safe start.I have done nothing with the filter since i set it up-its a Jewell 180 tank with supplied filter.Should I change the white floss at the top or not?
I have 5 guppies,2 mollies and 4 platies in.
Am I in the right direction and what should I do next ?

thanks

Yep, your moving in the right direction, keep doing as many water changes as needed to get the ammonia down to zero, or as close as you can get, as for the white floss, change that at least once a week, i buy a bag of floss from my LFS and just cut it to size, it's a LOT CHEAPER than buying named brands already cut to size. One thing i do though is double up on the shop bought floss as it is a little thinner than branded floss.

Hope this helps,

Mark.

Your algae problem is common with a new set up, nothing to worry about, just make sure you get rid of as much as possible with each clean.

If i'm wrong then someone else with greater experience will correct me, it might be worth giving fatheadminnow, waterdrop or oldman47 a pm, they've given me so much advice and got me on the right track.

Hope this helps.

Mark.
