Hi not posted in a while as been busy with the christmas. Anyway I ended up doing a fish in cycle before I read most of the advice on here. My tank is 125ltr and after reading the fish in cycle guide I have 5 zebra danios 2 dwarf Gouarmis and a albino cory catfish who have all been in since about 5th december. It has been hard work I must admit and I definently reccomend the fishless cycling to anyone starting out.

Anyway after testing ever day and changing water every day from 5th of december after getting readings of .25 ammonia every day I tested yesterday and for the first time it read 0. I tested again today and 2 days running its read 0. I am hoping for same again tomorrow. Does this mean there I am starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.

The fish are all fine and swimming around fine. Also noticed that the 2 dwarf Gouarmis I have seemed to have got much brighter in colour especially the orange one. Was a dul sort of orange when I got him but now you can spot him a mile off.

Have you tested the nitrite and nitrate levels? It sounds like you could possibly be cycled, but you won't know unless your nitrite level (as well as ammonia) is zero, and the nitrates are up. I suggest getting the API kits as soon as you can.

Nitrites are 0 and nitrates have been around 5ppm for several days but I have been changing water nearly every day so levels wont be high.

no dont change your water, gets rid off the ammonia, only at the end do we perform a WC

Well i have had to keep doing water changes as instructed in the fish in cycle but i have not done one for past 2 days and results are coming up 0

oh right ive never done a fish in cycle with water changes, it just removes ammonia thus not providing the cultured bacteria with enough ffod, so the bacteria levels will receed

Was just following the guide done by Miss Wiggles. no water changes and 0 readings in 2 days must be getting somewhere though right?

oh sorry i thought you were doing a fishless cycle, ive read so many cycling threads.

yes water changes should be done every day to keep the ammonia and nitrite to a 0

Tez,

Since you've now observed both ammonia and nitrite(NO2) measuring zero several times on days when you've done a water change, you are now ready to *not* do water changes and just test for both in your morning and evening tests. If you can go two full days without water changes and ammonia and nitrite are maintained at zero then you are cycled!

There's a very good chance you are indeed cycled, but just test it out to be sure,

Yeah, congrats Tez.

From here on the important thing to do is to ensure you don't add too many more fish at once, as this will cause the ammonia to spike again.

There is no hard and fast rule about what is ok and what isn't as every tank and every filter are different. I find a good rule to follow is to add no more than 1/3 of the fish already in the tank at any one time.

For example, if you already have 9 guppies, add no more than 3 guppies the next time you buy fish.

Obviously it can't be done by simply counting the number of fish as sme fish are bigger than others and will produce more waste. Try to base it on how much waste you think the fish will produce.

Good luck and keep us updated. :good:
