There is a link in my signature area - that'll be your bedtime reading!

Here's the precis version.

1)Every day, test the water.
2)If you see 0ppm ammonia and nitrite, do nothing.
3)If you see between 0-0.25ppm of either ammonia or nitrite, do a 50% water change.
4)If you see over 0.25ppm, do a large water change (like 80-90%) and then test again. Goto 2).

As time goes on, you'll see less and less positive readings. When you can go for a week seeing Double Zeros (ie 0ppm ammonia and nitrite), you are cycled.

You don't really need to worry about nitrate, as it's not harmful to fish (or at least not in sensible concentrations). With the number of water changes you're going to be doing, you will also be diluting nitrate. Once the filter is cycled, a weekly water change will be sufficient to keep nitrate at sensible levels (anywhere from 0-60ppm is ok), and any plants that you have will also absorb nitrate as a fertiliser.
