Fish In A Tank

The general rule is 1 inch to 1 gallon of water.

However I have a 16gal 2.5 foot tank and am planning to put in 12 harlequins, a betta two platies and either 6 corys or 3 otocinclus.

So that should give you an idea

depends on the type of fish. what are you planning on keeping?

It depends on the fish in question. The inch per gallon rule is a good guide to start off with, but one twelve inch fish is not the same as twelve one inch fish.

would definitely avoid plecos then. they are very messy fish, producing a huge amount of waste and can grow quite large. would not keep loaches either really. have a look at smaller fish.
