Fish In 30 Gallon Tank?

although having no experience with firemouths or acaras whatsoever, i would still have to give a resounding NO! even dwarf cichlids which are much smaller than firemouths need at least 15 gallons of space per breeding pair. i seriously doubt that firemouths (which i believe are 6"+) would be happy with anything under 20g as breeding territory.

you might could get a plec or sturdy larger tetras in there, but not another breeding pair of chiclids. the third firemouth i can't vouch for or against; as far as i know, firemouths form monogamous pairs and wouldn't be kind to the third wheel.

so a non-breeding (both male) pair of blue acaras would do ok with my breeding pair of firemouths?

Windtrancer, the thing you are not understanding at this point is that cichlids do not like each other. Other cichlids are considered threat and compitition. A pair of firemouths should have the entire 30 gallon tank as their territory and not have to fight other cichlids over a tiny little piece of it. In addition, two males never get along. Plus, a pair of Acara's should have a 50 gallon on their own, let alone sharing a 30 with more cichlids.

If the welfare of the fish is of interest, then a pair firemouths fills the tank as far as cichlids go.

what you're telling me is a bit ridiculous, as i've heard of people having cichlid tanks, where they keep multiple species. what's the deal with that?

yeah, but those tanks are BIG or the cichlids are SMALL. a 30g is not big nor are firemouths small.

so, NO.

stop trying to cram more cichlids in that 30g!! you'll just wind up with a tragedy. look into other types of fish that wouldn't be direct competition for your firemouths.
