Have had a look at the fish species page for some ideas. I allready know i want gouramis, but i didnt know what i wanted to put with them.

I have a 160L tank, dimensions 100 x 40 x 50.

This is what i would like, perhaps you could tell me which would go well with each other and how many a could/should get.

Dwarf Gouramis
Siamese fighting fish
German blue rams.
Sterbai Corrys
Neon/ cardinal tetra

Thats all i can think of so far. If you could think of other suitable tank mates please comment.

Thanks,

gouramis and bettas arnt recomended
some bettas will live happly with anythink but others will attack anythink you put in with them it justy depends on the betta

Curviceps and/or keyhole cichlids.

Perhaps invest in a smaller, second tank if you're still set on a betta.

Like your list but totally agree with the others, at some unexpected point the male Dwarf G. might attack the betta viciously.

My suggestion for additional fish would be to study the various other small tetras, there are tons of them, and having a nice sizeable school separate from the neon school could look really nice.

The neons/cards and the GBRs should ideally be late introductions at 4 to 8 months out after fishless cycling.

Thanks for your comments guys, i expected the comments on the betta really, having read alot about their temperament. Although i have heard a couple of wonder stories about them getting along with other community fish. Shame, i really like them. Perhaps i will invest in a small 10 gal or something if i decide to keep one in the future.

I understand about the tetras being late introductions, due to them preferring a mature tank.

How about angel fish, would they suit my tank with the other fish i have in mind with them?

Other possibilities include,

Khuli loaches
Pleco (not sure which kind, please advise)
Clown loach
Glowlight danio

Hmm... glowlight danios, dwarf Gs, neons, picture of salt water fish in avatar I'm starting to think you need one of those pep talks about how you need to "let the colors of the below-surface freshwater scene come to you." A saltwater tank can jump out at you kind of like arriving at a party at an impressive bright-colored house interior, whereas a freshwater tank can be like one of those quiet evenings with your best friends where you come away with some real insights (ok, waterdrop will now shut up, lol) Seriously, freshwater fish, quite a few of them, have these kind of reflective qualities very often that really grow on you, especially during quiet night viewing and shoals of them can really take your breath away -- a whole bunch of the tetras do this in my opinion.

Well you got me. When i started getting interested in the hobby, about 18 months ago, all i could think of getting was a saltwater aquarium, but after some research i found that it was alot more difficult and in-depth that i first anticipated, not to mention the cost of the set up. So i decided to go for a freshwater set up first, just to test the water if you will, no pun intended. Really see if fishkeeping was for me and to see if i could cope with the commitment needed to sustain a healthy aquarium. I guess all this shows somewhat in my fish selection.

One day i hope to have a saltwater aquarium, but until then im going to concentrate and put all my efforts into creating the most beautiful freshwater display that i can, and hopefully make some friends along the way.

Men and saltwater fish :p I tell you. everytime my husband and I go into the LFS he points at coral and clown fish anything in the blue haze water. I could punch him in the top of his head. He doesn't help with the freshwater and complains everytime I want a fish or need something for the tank. I would cry at the thought of managing and explaining the cost of a saltwater tank.

 always wondered which of the two in the picture was doing the talking!

Neons get eaten by angelfish, but cardinels should be ok (4-5cm smallest tank mate), I doubt there would be issues with any of the others you've listed. Clown loaches will grow too big for your tank (look at zebra, yoyo, polkadot etc. loaches instead, or of course the kuhli loaches you mentioned, 4+ stock). Quite a few plecos (esp. common plecs) will grow way too big for your tank, but most bristlenose species should be ok and you should be able to stock at least 2 of them quite comfortably in the tank.

You also need to think about 'swim layers'. Don't get too many bottom dwellers, or too many top swimmers, I find mid level is more flexible but don't go crazy with that either.

Regards the betta, you could try him in there if you didn't have the gourami. Gourami and betta don't seem to mix. But if you add angelfish you need to be careful too, some will tolerate/ignore a betta, others won't.

Other fish you could look at are cockatoo apistos (in place of the blue rams), the previously mentioned curviceps or keyhole cichlids (in place of the angelfish), discus since they like the same high temperature that blue rams do. You could even get away with a blue acara in that community (but I'd side with cardinels over neons in this case though).

Thanks for all your comments, i will take a trip down to my LFS pretty soon to see what they have in stock. And what they can order in.
