thanks Nelly

amazing how quick i got a reply! been very helpful! wonder anyone knows how hard it is to keep them incaptive

No, it can't be a Monodactylus argenteus. The eyes of the fish in the first link are too large to be one of those. My LFS has one of those. It goes by something that starts with an "A". I'll have to check and see.

I agree with Nelly, they look like Monodactylus argenteus - Monos are typically kept in brackish water, typically 1.010, juvies can be kept in fresh water. They can be adapted to full marine conditions as they grow older. Should be kept in group, are large waste producers and very hardy fish.

Neale Monks book, brakish water fishes show a photo on page 64 of the exact fish in your photo (well, IMO the exact fish)although the ones in your photo are stressed, their black lines are barely visable.

I have kept monos in brakish water - very hardy flash of silver in the tank :good: however most people wouldn't keep them, as thye need to be kept a group.

ps the best person to ask about this species is Neale himself, you will find him in the Brackish section :good:
