Hi all,

I picked up two of these guys over the weekend and currently have them in my quarantine tank. I was told they were green Texas Cichlids. Can anyone verify?

Thanks.....

I've seen them called that or they are called a green terror cichlid.

Yes they are texas cichlids (herichthys carpintis), I have kept these wonderful fish, but two is asking for trouble I am afraid, they will go at each other none stop until one is dead if they are both the same sex, if they are male and female they are highly aggressive parents, do not have them in with any other fish.

A single texas is usually ok.

Ok, thanks for the info RR & Star. I've already discovered that they don't play nice with other fish. They're currently in a tank with a convict pair, and the male is constantly flaring at them. Also, he constantly chases the female so that she now hides behind the filter. Thankfully, my divider should be arriving by the weekend so she'll be able to spend the rest of her quarantine time in peace.

Are there any suitable tank mates at all for a single texas?

Provide her plenty of cover to get away from the male until the divider arrives. Are you planning on breeding them?

Convicts do make good tank mates for texas, I also had a JD with texas no problems, however the JD was a rescue and it came from a tank with a texas that constantly attacked it, but it was fine with my group of texas. I also had severums with texas, ellioti, firemouth RTBS but not all at the same time :). It does depend on the character of the individual texas. I started with 20 fry (long story) but over time changing them around I ended up with 7 that were very calm and peaceful, except with silver fish, like silver dollars etc.

My boys,

I would love to have a group again, but I no longer have the tanks to seperate the males/females/aggressive ones off.  I lost them all to a virus :(

Those texans look very nice! It's good to know they can mixed with other fish, as I'm thinking of setting up a SA/CA tank based around them. I have no immediate plans to breed them, but might consider it in the future. For now I just want to enjoy them because they are stunning fish.

The female has escaped to the convicts' territory, and he's now leaving her alone. The convicts are indifferent to her, but hopefully the divider will come before they start spawning.
