Satanoperca ??? I cannot decide between jurupari or leucosticta, what do you guys think.

jurupari.jpg

If its any help there is a bluish tinge to his tail and dorsal fin and (depending on his mood) light bluish spotting on the body.

More leucostica, but you know thats what I thought when I saw him, however, have you looked up satanoperca acuticeps? Having had a look around since I saw him, the blue colouring does look alot like them.

Colouring is more like mine however the pics I have found show 3 spots similar to the daemon

Didnt think about the spots  in which case I still think Leucostica.

Whatever he is he has grown 1/2" in the 2 weeks I have had him, another 2 weeks in that tank make sure everything is totally fine with him and I think he can go into one of the bigger tanks.

Finally found a good site, I think mine maybe a jurupari :hyper:

spookily almost identical picture to what minxy took!!

Its a Satanoperca Juruapri. It lacks the spangles on the face.
This is what a Satanoperca leucosticta looks like... (it is mine)

I'm interested that you have yours on gravel. Are they not an earth eater, thus require sand?

True, yes they are an earth eater. They will sift through tiny pieces of gravel to find food. So they require a substance. Not only sand but gravel will work as well.

That's interesting to know. I have a juvie Geo sp. Tapajo growing out until he is big enough to go into my big tank. The big tank has gravel, quite small pieces. I was worrying about having to replace all the substrate. Maybe I won't have to? I thought they sifted through gills?

They do and whilst sand is the better option, small fine gravel is acceptable. Large grained gravel is not good for them, particualarly when young as it can get stuck in their gills and removing it is very difficult and can cause serious damage.

Excellent. It's small stuff. He will be going in there once he gets to about 4" I think. Hopefully I'll have found him a couple of buddies by then.

Thanks Flagtail :good: I can hopefully try and find him some friends now

Severum I already have, urau are something I keep looking at, I would love some in my 400l tank, but thats something for the future. I am tempted to try and locate some friends for this little guy, now I know exactly what he is :good:
