Today I went to my lfs and I looked at the feeder guppy tank. In there I saw a fish that wasn't a guppy. Since I know everbody there they said they would give it to me for free with my platy. I figured if i didn't take it, someone would use it as a feeder guppy so it took the little guy to save his life. I don't have any pics rigth now but the guy said it might be some type of tetra, a sharpae so something he said. It has an elongated body, about 2 inches. Its a normal white/gray color with a stripe starting at its mouth, going through its eyes, and ending right at where the tail fin starts. It also has kind of a black stripe on the middle of its underbelly. Any ideas?

Sounds a lot like a false siamese algae. See this site. If not, then a photo would definitely help. It definitely doesn't sound much like a tetra as most of them son't really have elongated bodies except for neons and they usually don't get that long.

I was actually going to post that it looks kind of like SAE or CAE. That should help you a lot, and I dont think its a tetra as I can't find any tetras like it. Keep in mind that this is not a type of algae eater (so its not a CAE or SAE). When I say not a type of algae eater I mean that its not a bottom feeder, probably a mid or top dweller. It also has an upward mouth and a circular tail.

Algae eaters aren't necessarily bottom feeders but it definitely doesn't sound like it from the description now. Probably will need a pic. Maybe someone else can shed some light.

When I said bottom feeders I meant that a bottom feeder lays on the bottom or glass and doesn't continuasly swim like most other fish.

Kinda sounds like a rasbora of some sort, cept for the circular tail part...
And it doesnt look like any livebearer? (check for a....shoot i forgot the word...the fin you sex live bearers by...gonopodium?)

Pictures would definately help, at the moment I don't have the foggiest :p

From You Description I would say it is most likely a type of Pencil Fish.

Don't think its a livebearer (doesn't have the same upward mouth as them either). It's not a pencilfish either. I don't really have my camera at the moment and the fish is hiding under a building anyways.

I got pics! I also have a second fish to ID. Apparently the striped unknown fish actually hangs out near the bottom and low middle.

Here is the striped one that we were wondering about. So, what is it?

The one on the bottom in this pic.

Also, I bought a platy that day I bought the striped one but I was so excited about the striped fish, that I didnt get to see what type of platy I bought. Looks similar to a sunburst. What type of platy is it?

It's the top platy.

The striped fish is a blue fin killi fish. It's a native here in FL. :good: They come in all the time with feeders.

EDIT: Just found the scientific name: Lucania goodei

I just looked the BF killi up and the photos I found on line look nothing like the striped fish. The killi shows a rounded doral fins with loads of color although there is one photo that looked similar.

Edit: After further review, it looks like it is probably a female BF killi as those are much more bland and plain with clear fins. More photos

Another thing, too, is the fact that it may be blending into the lighter substrate and is also may be pale because of the larger fish. From what I've heard, these fish are pretty shy.

I almost set up a tank for them a long time ago, but never got around to doing it. They aren't hard to find in FL shops, since they somehow get mixed in with the feeder fish and shrimp.

It's a female. Do males sometimes get mixed in also? I have never seen these guys in feeder tanks and I go to my lfs every week. Also, anyone know what type of platy that is?

I've seen males a couple of times. You just have to keep your eyes open. What LFS do you usually go to? Generally, places like Petsmart won't get them in, but other, true LFS' will get them in periodically, 'cause I think they use their own supplier (petsmart, I mean).

They're hard to see sometimes, so, like I said, just keep looking. Once you've noticed them, they seem to be everywhere!

PS: Sorry, but I don't know what type of platy that is. Maybe you should post it in the live bearer section?
