I would like to make use of the depth of tank I have (2 feet), also to offer fish a lot of hiding places in the hope they will be more confident and so more visible in the tank. I have thought it might be an idea to buy a few small rigid footballs, to make holes in the and suspend them hanging in the upper part of the tank.
Also I have gotton hold of 2 long tubes (see attached photo) that I thought I could make holes in and perhaps have the wider one vertical and the other laying at the back of the aquarium.
I intend to have a community tank of smallish fish: Platys, Tetras, Rainbow fish...What do you think about this idea, do you think the fish would make use of these things? Otherwise how else could I make use of the upper part of the tank?

Others may correct me but unless your fish are bottom dwellers I can't think of a species of fish that would want hidey holes. I have brown, square-section drainpipe in mine but it is purely for the clown loaches as my one siamese algae eater and my six diamond tetra's don't go near them. My BN catfish has his own place (somewhere), my cory's are always out in the open (I do so love their relative innocence) and my kulhi loaches hide UNDER the drainpipe.

I wouldn't bother with anything if your fish are mid or top feeders, their safety lies in their numbers not in hiding away.

one gd way is getting a piece of small to medium size bogwood/ driftwood and drill a hole in the side a few times and attach suction cups in these holes ( how many sucton cups depends on the size of wood ) then you can stick them to the side of your tank they look great and you can add plants to them aswell if done right they bring real depth to the tank. hope this helps

I dunno, my experience might be an exception but my white cloud mountain minnows love zooming in and out of a cave i made (made of

half a plant pot buried under the gravel so only the entrace is visible) ... the males

often do fin displays outside of it, so i'm guessing they are trying to attract females to mate in it?
