Fish Have White Spot...

i have just had an outbreak of white spot in my tank.
ive been told that i have to remove the carbon from my filters while using the medication.....
is there any way i can get around it? because i dont realy want to tamper with my canister filter until i have to change the carbon ( the filter is a pain to get started)

my 3d background came unstuck so i had to remove as fish got stuck behind, cannot be bothered to drain and sylicone again,so i have nothing just the colour yellow from the wall

no, if you're treating the whitespot with a medication then you need to remove the carbon otherwise the carbon will be removing the medication from the tank almost as fast as your putting it in.

If your carbon is old then it may have lost it's effectiveness but you should always remove the carbon anyway to maximize the medications effectiveness

also, the carbon isn't something you should have in your filter 24/7, it's only really used to remove medications and tannings from wood out of the water. It would be much more beneficial to remove the carbon permanently and replace it with an extra sponge for your bacteria to grow on, then just use carbon as and when required

As arob said, you should remove the carbon. I don't really know the pain of having to remove it from a canister. I prefer HOB filters so the removal is painless.

I'm going to put it even more bluntly. If you want your medication to do anything -- you know like kill the ich bug and save your fish from dying -- you will remove the carbon. Because the carbon will just suck up the medicine until is it fully saturated, not leaving any medicine to actually cure anything.

It is the equivalent of going to the drugstore, getting your prescription filled, and then flushing the pills down the toilet.

Difficult or not, if you aren't going to remove the carbon, you might as well not put any medication in the water.
