i have a big blue stripey kenyi (so i have been told) when i got it it was bright blue but now its more green with a hint of blue am i doing something wrong or is this normal i also have 2 yellow labs and they are still a lovely bright yellow i have had them over a year could you also tell me if its ok to put parrot cichilds in with these fish cheers

oh and on a stranger note my fish don't seem to poo ever ??????????

is it green or yellow? if it is turning yellow it is maturing into a male. all kenyi are born with female colors and change to male coloration.

is he swollen? what are you feeding him? high protein in africans can cause malawi bloat

ah,,i have a question about my kenyi too! Sorry for the hijack...
this one was very yellow when it was small, now it is turning into this...wth?

thats not a kenyi, its a kind of lab.
you're positive? it was sold to me as a kenyi and id'd on another site when it was small as a kenyi...

Looks somewhat similar to a Maylandia Aurora, what was it identified as when you purchased it? Oh you said a kenyi oops..lol. How reputable was the seller? Doesn't really look like a kenyi to me.

quite sure, thats what I had. I went to some site, cookie cutter or whatever, its about cichlids, and they have a stocking idea page and there were all names of labs, so i put them in google and a pic of a fish like that came up. Those fish are actually advertised wrong alot. Most people that I ask about those think that theye are Zebrass. Kenyis are completly diffrent looking color wise. But some lfs are just stupid.

i got 4 kenyi at the same time, from the same tank...that one looked just like the others when it was smaller...weird...ah well,it's a gorgeous fish :)

were they really small when you got them? Some fish have juvininal colors, thats probly what its juvinile colors are.

it was only about 1 1/2 inches when i got it...it is over 2 inches now,maybe 2 1/2....
would you think it's male?

to tell the sex you have to vent it, id bring it to a really good store and have them do that.

Actually male kenyi turn orange and females stay blue, I am having problems figureing mine too he/she is pink orange and blue, i don't think that's a lab colors may be similqr to a permult but ther body shape is more that of a maylandia or pseudo so it may still be a kenyi

Kenyi also tend to turn yellow sometimes as well

mine i also about the same size as yours venting uis the only sure way of doing it but i would wait a bit longer to see if it changes colors

i am glad you did as thats my fish to so its not what i thought it was he was bright blue with black stripes when i bought it i am so confused now :fun:
