I bought 5 neon tetras a little while ago, and all of a sudden last night all of them went missing. They were fine for about a month while I had them, and they all disapeared. I'm very confused as to what happened. :S

Are there any other fish in the tank with them?

They have been eaten

Do you have an Angel fish or something of a similar size?

5 Red Eyes Tetras and other assorted tetras, the biggest one is a cardinal tetra

It is very strange for them all to go compleatly missing, If you do a good search of the tank i bet you will find some evidence of there bodies, i would keep an eye on your other fish. What ever killed them may strike again! ( i mean you probably have some sort of desiese in the tank)

Serpae tetra are notorious fin nippers especially in low numbers, they may have worried the smaller neons by nipping until the point of death whereby the rest of the fish especially the corys will mop up the carrion. Not saying this is the case but keep an eye on the Serpae's

Is your tank planted (fake or real) with a lot of cover? It's possible they have died and are just out of site n and under the plants. There's definitely nothing in the tank that would eat 5 tetras in one night.

Could always check your filter for skeletons, happened to me with a loach. Got eaten (unknown to me at the time) and during my water change i found his remains.

This is the only aspect of fishkeeping I really hate. I don't mind removing them as floaters from the water but reaching into a filter to remove pads to find an odd squishy thing in there, brain not functioning wondering what it is only to hand scoop out to my horror is a regular nightmare I have after too much cheese.

I do have serpae tetras, 2 of them. What I'm thinking is, maybe they didnt all go missing in one night. Because they are hard to spot and I may of not noticed them missing untill all of them were gone, so a couple could of went missing each day and I would of still seen the other 2-3 that would of been in the tank and didnt think of anything of it. Either way im upset that they are gone. I checked my filters and stuff, and there was no skeleltons.

My tank is 40 Gallons.

As mentioned Serpaes are notorious fin nippers. Also you only have 2 so they may be extremely nervous. If you keep them in larger groups the aggression will usually only spread to their own kind but with only 2 its risky. Maybe they just stressed the neons to death and a few were picked apart and the others are rotting somewhere. Either way bummer man.
