I was thinking about this for a long time, if a fish eats another fish, does the other fish die right away, or does it swim around in the other fishes stomach for a while?

My sister's goldfish use to eat all the little fish in the tank. There were two incidents:
1. The goldfish ate the catfish head first and had it half way in it's mouth and spit it out when my sister scared it by hitting the tank. It survived for about 3 days after that.
3. The goldfish fully ate another fish (sorry don't know the name, but it was diamond shaped and medium sized), and then the next day the goldfish spit the fish out and the fish was still alive. It had a bitten tail and was a little tramatized but that was all. This fish survived about another 3 months before it died.
