Over the weekend I'm gonna go to a few car boot sales to try and pick up a cheap 20g+ tank and was just wondering if there was any common problems with tanks that I should look out for? (e.g. people trying to flog faulty tanks.)Bit of a difficult question to answer I spose but just wondering what I should look out for.(Alternatively, could any1 suggest or know of any places where they sale cheap tanks?)Cheers.

Oooops seems I've posted this 3 times! Sorry folks!

Nothing really, even if you do get unlucky and get a leaky tank, you can either fix it or sell it on as a gerbilarium or vivarium or similar.

Yes I have a Gerbilarium although it's not made of glass, It's plastic and have a cage on top of it, but Gerbilariums are by far the best homes for gerbils so it'd be easy to sell on.

Yep if the tank does leak there are some stickies in the DIY section on re-sealing and re-joinging the glass.

I find that most boot sellers these days are house clearence dealers.

If you are lucky enough to find someone offering a reasonable sized tank look to see what else they are selling. If they are a failed fish hobbiest the chances are there will be other equipment and the sort of decorations newbies go for on offer. This would indicate hopefully a good tank with little use and bargin to be had!

However, an old tank on its own amongst gardening tools, china and 1950's furniture from the back of a rusty white Transit Luton may suggest a less than perfect project- buyer beware!

Happy shopping ;)

Ps......Ebay, local freebe papers, newsagents windows and the swap and sale on this forum are all good places to start :good:

Alternative places to look would include Freecycle. I've gotten a free 18x12x12 tank from some kind person on my local Freecycle group. They even delivered it for me! Didn't cost a penny.

If it was me, I would ask if there are any leaks, watch out for signs of lying lol but say ok, if I give you a deposit and pour in this 2 litre bottle of evian and come back in an hour, pay you the rest and take the tank, unless the water's leaked out lol

2 litres wouldn't be much good if the tank was leaking near the top :p

I've had several tank from freecycle, a couple i've given to mates, i got a real good corner tank but had to let it go as i had no space, but my best freebie from freecycle was a fluval duo 800, complete setup. Filter heater lights, substrate food etc etc. Got this for free. Google freecycle, join your local group then see if any tanks come about.
