Fish Gathering At Suface Of Water

i changed the water yesterday as usual.today all of the fish are gathering at the surface with their mouths nearly sticking out.their mouths are also opening and closing faster than normal.any body any experience with this??

What are you water stats and when did you last feed them?

check water stats it could also be low oxygen levels. if water stats are fine the aim the filter outlet at the surface of the water so it creates little "waves" or ripples. this surface aggitation will allow more oxygen to enter the water

also i take it you did of course dechlorinate the water when you did your water change?

Just fed them today,I turned down the heater a few degrees think it could be faulty.Looks like they are gasping for air.I hav,nt got a test kit for the water.Will have to get one tomorrow

yes i dechlorinated the water,seem's to be an oxygen issue.the filter was pointing downward,i'll move it now,thanks for the advice

ok you should find if it is an oxygen level issue that re-aiming filter should quickly have the desired effect .

If you used warm water for your water change, or a mix of warm and cold that could be the reason. As far as I'm aware, warm water contains less oxygen so just keep your filter outlet pointing towards the surface to agitate the water.

Surface agitation = oxygen rich water

Water changes won't reduce oxygen it will actually increase it, warm water does have a lower oxygen content but your not going to replace old water with new water that is of a higher temp. Slow moving water which has little or no surface movement has a very low oxygen content, a example is the Betta or infact any Labyrinth fish that live in oxygen depleated water like rice paddies or shallow pools, there is little oxygen because there is little movement hence the labyrinth organ.
