i read somewhere a little while back that it's ok to feed your fish some leftovers from your dinner once in a while, for example, small peas and sweetcorn, and even small pieces of meat...

is this true?

Yes... but it would be better to prepare the vegetables and meats especially for the fish, since the oil should not be placed into the tank.

Meats you can use are beef heart and seafood. Feed sparingly.

Plants you can feed are romaine lettuce, cucumbers, aucchini, carrots, peas, to name a few.

You don't necessarily need to prepare them specially for your fish, but you do need to be aware of how you prepare them for you and evaluate if this is a healthy idea for your fish. For example, I cook my corn and peas with butter. I wouldn't feed that to my fish. But, if you were to open a can of peas and heat em up, there would be no issue feeding a couple to your fish (when cool). Having said that, it is probably best to set aside a little bit prior to preparing food for yourself. This way you make sure nothing "extra" ends up in your tank, or your fish. I imagine there are, in addition to oils and such, seasonings and the like that should not really be eaten by fish.

Oops! Lol, you reminded me of something my brother did once, he made chili and he started dropping in the occasional bean or hunk of hamburger in the tank, the eels and bass absolutely loved it, but I guess that wasn't good for them...

That's what you get with kids

The beefheart can be hard to get sometimes, my stupid grocery store didn't have any when I asked. But you could buy those cheap clams, the ones they sell for 10 cents each or so and chop them up for your fish.

I've heard that horse meat is ok too

This is interesting.
I just feed my fish bloodworms and whatnot.

I can't say i've ever heard anyone feeding their fish...horse meat

In the US horsemeat is only found in some pet foods. It is illegal for humans to eat it here. So you would have a hard time finding it.

Personally I'd find it hard to do since I have, and adore, horses. But then some places people thing eating cows is bad!
