Fish/eel/worm/snake?

Is there anything that makes them less likely to burrow? Like, if I had sand or pebbles as opposed to 'normal gravel'? And still put plants in for them to hide in.

Part of some fishes nature to borrow unfortunatly, however it is fun to watch :D

Do they come out to eat?
Or eat stuff whilst burrowed?

If they arn't ill and are hungry which most fish always are (greedy) then the second they smell that food they will hunt for it :D

Thats's cool then. Atleast you get to see them at feeding time. :)

I had 2 in my 20 gallon and i rarely saw them except at night, i put a couple more in and all of a sudden i see all 4 of them all the time. they sometimes come out and forage for food all at once during the day. they're great little fish and cheap so get as many as you can handle! :)

I have 4 in my tank.

With a mix substrate of sand and gravel and you can always see them. There's plenty of hiding spaces for them if they want to, but they generally huddle in a corner over at the gravel. They'll come out as and when they want and swim all around the tank - top, middle and bottom.

Love these things!

oh and two of mine are laden with eggs :D
