I have had two of my Kribs die from this, and I am not sure what it is?

The first signs of the disease is really heavy deep breathing. Then the fish will retire to the bottom of the tank and rest in one spot. Then the fish will begin to lean over, not able to stay up right. Usually when this happens the fish has about 12 hours to live. Both of my kribs have died from this and I have no idea what is is?

It was suggested to me that is may be Gill Flukes, but there was no sign of anything on the gills, so I have no clue?

Water stats are good,
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate 10 ppm

I had a small nitrite spike after these two fish have died due to my fault. I am sure that the nitrite spike is not he cause of death.

Anyone have a clue?

Thank you!

It sounds like a bacterial infection.
Do the kribs look pale or darker in colour.
Are they acting listless and lethagic.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
What do you feed the fish.
Do the fish look bloated or thin.
Are the fish still eating.

Signs of gill flukes are.
Pale gills with excess mucas or red inflamed gills. Can sometimes look like there gills are bleeding.
Flicking and rubbing.
Erratic swimming or darting.
Gasping at surface of tank, or laboured breathing.
Opaque body with excess slime.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
Spitting food out.
Weighloss sometimes.

You can't see gill flukes with the naked eye.

What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet. Long, clear stringy poo, only the ones who died with it.
What do you feed the fish. Sinking pellets and flake food
Do the fish look bloated or thin. No
Are the fish still eating. Not the ones who died. They stop eating, the ones who died. The ones alive right now still eat like normal and are showing no signs of the disease.

Long stringy clear poo can be fish isn't eating, bacterial infection, internal parasites.

I would treat the tank with a bacterial med.
Improve the fish diet with frozen foods and veg.

Do the fish show any of these symtoms.
Red inflamed anus, or enlarged anus.
Worms prutruding from the anus.
Flicking and rubbing.
Lost any fish to bent spines.

No, none of those symptoms. Just really heavy breathing, lays on side at bottom of tank, not eating and long clear poo.

Ok.
I would take the bacterial route for now.
Keep a look out for internal parasite signs.

Maracyn one or two. Or maracyn plus.

Let the board know how you get on if you don't mind.

Of course, lol

As of now there are no further signs of parasites on the fish that remain. And the one female is beginning to display to the male.

That's good news then.

Hi Wilder: My 6 yr old angel male has red swollen gills this a.m. He is listless, not eating. at bottom of tank or on slate.
I introduced four tetras about 10 days ago. A few days later my two yr old tetras had one w/ a white spot on the mouth. I treted twice with Jungle brand Fungus Clear. It contains nitrofurazone, furazolidone and potassium dichromate.

All water stats good today. 25% water change done just now.

What do you think? How are flukes introduced?

Thanks dee dee in Indiana USA

Post script~ It's not really the gill, it's more like the area around the side fins. Such as where they are attached.

Thank you, dee dee

How many gallons or litres is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Can you post water stats please.

All fish have a few flukes abit like cats with fleas. Young fish are more prone.
Any redness to the white spot on the lips.
Red gills can be bad water quality, gill flukes, bacterial gillrot.

I left a list of the symtoms of gill flukes. is there any other symtoms apart from the red gills.
Also need to rule out bad water quality.

tank is 29 gallons
6 lemon tetra, about 1 1/2 in each
4 sm rasboras
4 sm silver tip tetra
6 bronze cory cats
1 3 in plec
ammonia 0, nitrate/nitrite 0, water hardness 8(just our tap water here), ph 8.0
the white spot on lip is receding and no redness
see postscript
tank has been set up eighteen months with same fish only new thing is silver tip tetra.

Wilder is very informative and i thank Wilder for being apart of this forum helping us all out. Thank you so much Wilder!

I'm treating my tank now with E.M. Erythromycin from API, it covers alot of bacterial stuff for fw and sw fish, i would like to recommend this. You both may want to look into this medication as it sounds like it will cover what you need.
