What kind of test kit are you using?

There should be some trace of nitrate within a cycled tank, unless your test kit you are using is not good and you are getting inaccurate readings.

So, what is the test kit you are using?

I agree we need to know which test kit are you using.
I agree it's rare to have a nitrate reading of 0.
What your tap nitrate reading. Do you have live plants.

It's best to use antibiotics in issolation as they wipe the beneifical bacteria out in the filter.
If only one fish is ill it's best to issolate and treat, as the fish can build an immunity up to antibiotics.

Hi Wilder~ I am using an API Freshwater Master Test Kit. I did the tap water NO3 = 5 ppm. I re-tested the tank and it is still neg. I went ahead and euthanized the angel. He was obviously not doing well. After 6 1/2 years, maybe it was just his life span.

Anyway, everyone else is doing fine.

Thank you all for your input.

And Wilder~ You are so very patient with us. You have to repeat yourself day aftr day to educate us with your years of experience. I am sure I speak for many others when I say a hearty, "Thank You"
