I bought 8 neon tetras to go with my 2 Dwarf Gouramis, 6 zebra danios, and to platys. 6 of them ended up dying. I noticed that when i put them in the danios and gouramis were picking on them. i thought that after a while this wouldn't be a problem. Later after i was picking up there dead bones, i realized otherwise. 2 of them survived. My initial reaction was the gouramis did it because they're the bigger fish. Well I went to a local tropical fish store and one of the workers when i explained the problem immediatly said that it was the danios as they can be vicious. It makes sense because my uncle had a tank also with danios that were absolutly terrorizing the tank and ended up deforming another danios tail. After my uncle did away with them his tank immediatly showed signs of improvement. So I decided to do away with my danios and buy 5 jumbo neon tetras in hope that my tank would also improve?
My question is this. Has anyone else had trouble with zebra danios or do you think it could be the gouramis? Anyone's input on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
I've never had problems with danios at all - they are quick swimmers which can disrupt the activities of other fish at the top of the tank but I've never had agression???... Wonder what's up with that? You must have had a vicious batch?.
It could be that the tetras died of something else (neon tetras sometimes die soon after introduction to a new tank) and then the other fish and eating their bodies. Fish often do that... it's gross but it's what they do
