i am setting up my first tropical fish tank, having read how too guides till im blue in the face im still having trouble.
set up tank about 3 weeks ago, added ammonia to 5mg, heater is in mid 80s. thete has been no drop in ammonia at all, no nitrites but nitrates are at 1. am i doing something wrong or should i just be patient? please help, any advice wold be fantastic, thanks*

I assume this is a fishless cycle. Sometimes there is a delay before the first dropoff, sometimes as long as 2+ weeks. Patience is the key. The length of a cycle is greatly due to the number of bacteria you get in your tap water.

What is your ph?

What is your ph?

The first drop can be as short as four days or as long as three weeks. As Eaglesaquarium has stated you just need to be patient.

We can help a lot if you give us as much information as you can.

Tapwater Ph? Tankwater Ph? These can be different even tho you fill your tank from the tap.

How big is your tank?

What filtration do you have?

What substrate are you using?

What water dechlorinator did you use & at what dosage?

With this information we can get down to the nitty gritty of whats happening in your tank.
